The Beast Within

The 17th book in the Rougon-Macquart cycle, this story tells of the darker side of human nature whilst society evolved in 19th century France. Zola took the developing railway and used it to allude to the contrast of 'it' and our own atavistic nature.

  • "Lantier arbeitet als Lokführer. Er wird von psychischen Problemen gequält. Als er seine Cousine Flore küsst, verspürt er plötzlich einen innern Zwang, diese zu töten. Im letzten Moment kommt er wieder zur Besinnung. Die Ehe von Roubaud, Bahnhofsvorsteher von Le Havre, und seiner Frau Séverine ist nicht glücklich. Roubaud ist eifersüchtig, seine Frau Séverine wurde früher von ihrem Onkel Grandmorin missbraucht. Grandmorin ist Präsident der Eisenbahngesellschaft und wird von Séverine um Hilfe gebeten, als Roubaud ein Problem hat. Es kommt zum Streit zwischen Roubaud und Séverine. Roubaud plant den Mord an Grandmorin und zwingt Séverine dabei zu sein. Lantier bemerkt auf einer Bahnfahrt, wie Roubaud und Séverine in ein Abteil gehen. Lantier findet selbst Gefallen an Severine und schweigt deshalb bei den polizeilichen Ermittlungen. Dies führt dazu, dass zunächst ein Unschuldiger verdächtigt wird. Lantier und Severine beginnen ein Verhältnis. Severine versucht Lantier dazu zu bewegen, Roubaud umzubringen, was dieser auch beinahe tut. Séverine trennt sich dann von Lantier. Einige Zeit später treffen sich beide und als Lantier erkennt, dass es keine Zukunft für sie gibt, bringt er bei einem erneuten Anfall Séverine um. Tags darauf nimmt er sich das Leben. Roubaud wird wegen der Ermordung seiner Frau verurteilt."
