  • "This historical fact, that took place seventy-seven years ago, is not well known by the general public and seldom mentioned in American history books. Many Americans are astonished when told that the United States sent armed troops to Russia near the end of World War I to fight the Russian Bolsheviks. Russian students have always been taught about this incident. This group of American men were officially known as the North Russian Expeditionary Forces, or better known as the "Polar Bears." the majority of the 5,500 Americans were from Michigan. the war ended, but the Americans did not come home and the fighting continued in Russia. Large battles raged while Americans continued to die. It was a political decision: France and Great Britain wanted to destroy Bolshevism, the forerunner of Communism."
  • "At the same time, the political heat was intense from the families and media, especially from Michigan. the soldiers' letters that were sent to the wives and sweethearts alarmed the families and forced them to form an organization called "Detroit's Own Welfare Association" that marched, collected recall petitions, and demanded the soldiers' return. Finally on July 4, 1919, the first contingent came home to a ticker tape parade in Detroit. Mayor James Couzens told all who attended the parade that "these men and their mission will never be forgotten." Couzens' words were formed by his lips, but it was as if the world was watching a silent film. the words became vapor and most everybody forgot, for it was time to forget wars and the ugliness that it brought."
  • "The year was 1919. the event was the end of World War I. the locale was Russia. the participants were American Soldiers (with other Allied forces), the Bolshevik Red Army and the Russian White Army. the conflict was the fighting among all three armies. World War I ended in November of 1918 but some Americans were ordered to continue to fight and die for an unknown reason in a far away country. the American soldiers complained bitterly about a number of areas: they felt mistreated by their British superiors, they were not told why they were to continue to fight after the Armistice, they felt their British counterparts were given special treatment and most importantly, they felt abandoned by their own government."
