The Battle of Lepanto

Not a major battle but a battle with major impact, Lepanto was thought at the time to be the final act in Saracen interference in Western Europe. But that was not to be the case. Although Spain, Venice, and others banded together to stop Turkish naval power in the Western Mediterranean, the Turks lost the battle but not the war. The most lasting effects of the battle were in Spanish arts and letters-Cervantes lost his left arm, but lived to use his good right hand to create the European novel.
