Michael Strogoff, the courier of the czar

Though Michael Strogoff: The Courier of the Czar hews more closely to the genre of historical fiction than the science fiction for which Jules Verne is best known, the novel contains the same action-packed adventure and intrigue that made Verne famous, and critics now regard it as one of the author's most fully realized literary efforts. A must-read for Verne fans and lovers of fast-paced historical adventures.

  • "Michael Strogoff is sent by the Czar to warn his brother, the Grand Duke, of an imminent Tartar rebellion led by Feofar-Khan and Ivan Ogareff. Posing as a trader named Nicholas Korpanoff, Strogoff embarks on his mission. During the journey, he meets Nadia Fedorova, a young woman who hopes to join her father, Wassili, a political exile, in Siberia. Strogoff is captured by the Tartars but refuses to divulge his identity until Ogareff begins torturing Marfa, Strogoff's mother. Upon learning of Strogoff's true identity, Feofar-Khan orders his men to pass a hot saber over the prisoner's eyes. Although blinded, Strogoff escapes, intent on fulfilling his mission with Nadia's help. Ogareff, who has assumed Strogoff's identity, however, visits the Grand Duke and delivers the Czar's message. While attempting to kill Nadia, Ogareff discovers that Strogoff has regained his sight. Ogareff is killed by Strogoff who then decimates the forces of Feofar-Khan. Nadia is reunited with her father, after which she and Strogoff marry with the blessing of the Czar."@en
