  • "The Moving Finger writes; and, having writ, Moves on: nor all thy Piety nor Wit Shall lure it back to cancel half a Line, Nor all thy Tears wash out a Word of it.' In the 'rubaiyat' (short epigrammatic poems) of the medieval Persian poet, mathematician, and philosopher Omar Khayyam, Edward FitzGerald saw an unflinching challenge to the illusions and consolations of mankind in every age. His version of Omar is neither a translation nor an independent poem; sceptical of divine providence and insistent on the pleasure of the passing moment, its 'Orientalism' offers FitzGerald a powerful and distinctive voice, in whose accents a whole Victorian generation comes to life. Although the poem's vision is bleak, it is conveyed in some of the most beautiful and haunting images in English poetry - and some of the sharpest-edged. The poem sold no copies at all on its appearance in 1859, yet when it was 'discovered' two years later its first readers and admirers included Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Swinburne, and Ruskin. By the end of the century it was one of the best-known poems in the English language. Daniel Karlin's richly annotated edition does justice to the scope and complexity of FitzGerald's lyrical meditation on 'human death and fate'."
  • "Omar Khayyam (1048-1122) was a Persian mathematician, astronomer, and philosopher who was not known as a poet in his lifetime. These verses lay in obscurity until 1859, when FitzGerald published a free adapation of this Persian poetry. As a result, The Rubaiyat became one of the best-known and most often quoted English classics."

  • ""RUBAIYAT (meaning quatrains) was originally the composition of Persian poet, mathematician and astronomer Omar Khayyam. Each of the quatrains was originally composed on a particular occasion and forms a complete poem in itself. The poem suggests withdrawal from the sorry scheme of things. Over the centuries Rubaiyat has gained immense fame for its romantic melancholy which still appeals to the senses. It was first published in March 1859 as an unpretentious and anonymous pamphlet, only to be later discovered for its true literary worth by Rossetti and Swinburne."--book jacket."
  • "Omar Khayyam was a Persian poet and general genius who lived from 1048-1131. He wrote on Euclid, on the philosophy of mathematics and various aspects of geometry. He is also said to have helped correct errors in the Persian calendar. He wrote approximately a thousand quatrains of verse, which were famously translated much later in the 19th century by the British poet Edward FitzGerald."@en

  • "In 1859, Edward FitzGerald translated into English the short, epigrammatic poems of medieval Persian poet Omar Khayyam. If not a true translation--his Omar seems to have read Shakespeare and the King James Bible--the poem nevertheless conveyed some of the most beautiful and haunting images in English poetry, and some of the sharpest-edged. By the end of the century, it was one of the best-known poems in the English language, admired by Swinburne and Ruskin. Daniel Karlin's richly annotated edition focuses on the poem as a work of Victorian literary art, doing justice to the scope and complexity of FitzGerald's lyrical meditation on "human death and fate." Karlin provides a fascinating critical introduction which documents the poem's treatment of its Persian sources, along with its multiple affiliations with English and Classical literature and to the Bible. A selection of contemporary reviews offers an insight into the poem's early reception, including the first attack on its status as a translation. -- Publisher description."

  • "Omar Khayyam was a real man, a mathematician who lived in north eastern Persia between 1048 and 1131 (or '26). He was born in Naishapur, a city about two hundred and fifty miles from present day Teheran. His province, Khorassan, was prosperous, being both fertile and on the China-Mediterranean trade route. Omar Khayyam (Khayyam means tentmaker, presumably his father's trade) became one of the foremost mathematicians and astronomers of his day. He was a follower of the Arab philosopher Avicenna. In 1074 he helped reform the Persian Calendar, though this has been disputed. As a mathematician he used geometry to solve cubic equations, and also worked on Euclid's Fifth Postulate. Then, because of political unrest and personal spite, he lost favor and retired to write bitter-sweet verses about the consolations of wine, companionship, and the fleetingness of time. His chosen form was a four line stanza called the ruba'i, which means "foursome" in Arabic. The plural is rubaiyat. A complete English translation of the title, therefore, would be Omar Kayyam's Quatrains by Edward Fitzgelard. -- Abriged from http://www.victorianweb.org (Nov. 25, 2013)."@en
  • "The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam is the title that Edward FitzGerald gave to his translation of a selection of poems, originally written in the Persian language and of which there are about a thousand, attributed to Omar Khayyam (1048?1123), a Persian poet, mathematician and astronomer. "Rubaiyat" (derived from the Arabic root word for 4) means "quatrains": verses of four lines. These works by Fitzgerald are the best known English translations. Of the five editions published, four were published under the authorial control of FitzGerald. The fifth edition, which contained only."@en

  • "In the eleventh century, in Persia, there lived a mathematician named Ghiyathuddin Abulfath Omar bin Ibrahim al-Khayyami--or, Omar, son of Abraham, the tent-maker. Omar wrote poetry, and while his rhymes received little attention in their day, they were rediscovered and translated into beautiful English--more than seven centuries later--by a gentleman and scholar named Edward FitzGerald. It was a meeting of minds, a great collaboration of the past and the present, and FitzGerald's rendition of those passionate verses has become one of the best loved poem cycles in the English language. With their concern for the here and now, as opposed to the hereafter, Omar Khayyam's quatrains are as romantic today as they were hundreds of years ago; they are a tribute to the power of one moment's pleasure over a lifetime of sorrow, of desire over the vicissitudes of time. Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, presented here with Edward FitzGerald's original preface, is truly a classic, and it will stand forever as one of our finest monuments to love."
