The collection is organized into twelve series: Biographical Information and Personal Correspondence; General Correspondence relating to particular organizations and topics; Obituaries, Papers and Certificates; Organizations; Urban League Indianapolis; Urban League National; African American History; Legal, Minority Housing; Racial Relations, School Desegregation; Essays, Speeches, Statements, and Programs; Clippings and Scrapbooks; and Audiotapes. The correspondence includes family correspondence and correspondence with noted civil rights promoters and politicians such as Shirley Graham Du Bois, Benjamin Mays, Thurgood Marshall, and Martin Luther King, Jr., and from groups in which Richardson played a role, including the Urban League, the NAACP, the United Negro College Fund, and the Church Federation of Indianapolis. Numerous speeches and public statements are also included.
