Similarity and creativity in design

This easy takes a critical look at similarity in design. Design is broadly understood as cognition in pursuit of action and similarity is shown to be pervasive and fundamental for design. A mediated understanding of similarity, as a purposive three-way relation between ideas, is proposed. Making explicit the mediate in the similarity relation is shown to facilitate the formation of new relations, making similarity a rich and powerful route through design. This view of similarity is different from metaphor or analogy which have traditionally been seen as direct, i.e., unmediated, two-way relations which do not need explication.
