Investigation for "super-sorbent" commercial processing project summary
Two ways were investigated to obtain improved calcium-based sorbents for EPA's LIMB technology on SO₂ control in coal-fired utility boilers. One approach is to precalcine limestone to provide a reactive CaO material suitable for direct furnace injection. The second approach, deemed far more promising, is to modify Ca(OH)₂ to achieve a higher level of reactivity. Two ways of modifying Ca(OH)₂ materials are sufficiently promising technically to have potential commercial application: (1) use methanol or ethanol in the hydration medium when Ca(OH)₂ is produced from CaO, to increase the specific surface area; and (2) use the additive lignosulfonate in Ca(OH)₂ to produce a finer particle size during sorbent injection. Of these, the latter is judged to be the more economically feasible.
