Broken blossoms

This English remake of D.W. Griffith's 1919 classic features Dolly Haas in the Lillian Gish role. The touching drama follows a jaded London businessman who has his faith in mankind restored by Lucy (Haas), a caring young woman with troubles of her own. Set in the Limehouse district of London, this is the story of Lucy, a 15-year-old living with her abusive prizefighter father, Battling Burrows. Driven from her home, she finds love and protection in the home of a gentle Chinese man. Together they begin to discover the joys that life has denied both of them. Then Lucy's father finds her, brutally beats her protector, takes her back home, and, in his rage, kills her. The grief stricken Chinese man avenges Lucy's death and then takes his own life.
