Series overview: A "never event" is an adverse medical event, occurring during care that is unambiguous, serious and preventable. These are shocking medical errors, such as wrong-site surgery, that should never occur. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), has moved aggressively to improve patient safety by adopting a policy of actively addressing some of these identified never events - and in fact denies payment to providers for some of them, when they do occur. This series identifies specific never events and describes practices that can prevent them. This series is designated for a total of 1.5 contact hours of continuing nursing education.
