"Alexander Sutherland (1760-1827) left his family home at Rogart, Scotland, in 1779 to join the army. After he was discharged in 1783, he became a packman, traveling through Scotland and northern England selling household goods. He settled at Hawkeshead, Lancashire, England, ca. 1793, and took over a stationery shop. He married Agnes Dobson (1764-1847) there in 1795. They had four children, 1796-1807. Their only child to marry, John Sutherland (1800-1888), was the father of five children, 1825-1847. Only two of their daughters married. Agnes Sutherland (1825-1870) married Joseph Cheesebrough (1822-1894) in 1851 and had five children. Mary Jane Sutherland (1847-1931) married Christopher Parkin (1847-1919) and had four children."@en . . . . . . . . . . . "Roots & records : when Sutherland came to Lakeland" .
