Mississippi masala

A fresh perspective is brought to bear on race in the South by interweaving racial issues with those of economic and cultural dislocation and excluding the familiar overarching 'liberal' white perspective. At the centre of the film is the relationship between Mira, the non-conforming daughter of an Indian family settled in Mississippi, and Demetrius, a clean-cut black man. Mira's family had been political refugees from Idi Amin's Uganda nearly twenty years earlier. The tendency to stereotyping is offset by an outsider's eye for detail and landscape and the sense of loss brought to this material by Nair, who, as a East African-born Indian, has also experienced the loss of homeland.

  • "During British rule in India, many Indians were sent to Uganda to build a railroad. When the railroad was complete, most of the Indians decided to make Uganda their home, where they prospered. Indian parents refused to let their children intermarry with Africans, and, using this as a pretext, General Idi Amin, in November of 1972, made it mandatory for all Asians to leave Uganda. One of the displaced families moves from Kampala to Greenwood, Mississippi, where they are dependent on their relatives. From 1972 to 1990, they run a liquor store, while their daughter Mina cleans motel rooms and bathrooms. Her father, Jay, maintains the exile's hope of return, but his daughter has become American and falls in love with Demetrius, an African American small businessman who runs a rug cleaning service. Both families must adjust to the fact that their children want to marry someone of a different race."@en
