  • "Godard's 'second-first' film marked his return to cinema after a decade of video experiment. The themes are not new - prostitution as a metaphor for alienation, the impossibility of durable relationships - although the connection between misogyny and repressed homosexuality is given a new emphasis. While basic oppositions - country v. city, commerce v. independence, sex v. work - are set out very simply, the narrative is developed with ambiguities and unexplained events contained in a dense stylistic weave. New strategies such as the use of stop motion slow down the action. Other devices complicate events by splitting attention. Godard's play on sound-image relationships is relocated. Collages of art cinema, pop art and Hollywood movie conventions and the sustained attempt to demolish illusionistic space are no longer central strategies. The images are more conventionally those of art cinema with reflexivity woven into the narrative."
  • "Revolves around 3 characters who are all at a turning point in their lives : a country girl who comes to the city to become a prostitute, a woman who decides to give up her city job to pursue an idyllic life in the country, & a television director, separated from his wife & daughter, & also at the end of his tether."
  • "This parody of modern life revolves around three characters who are all at turning points in their lives--the country girl who comes to the city to be a prostitute, the city woman who decides to give up her job and pursue an idyllic life in the country, and a television director who is separated from his wife and daughter."
  • "Abandonné par la femme qu'il aimait, partie à la campagne, un cinéaste ne peut se décider à quitter la ville et son travail, tandis qu'une autre femme se vend et initie sa soeur à la prostitution."
