Clinical applications of suggestion and hypnosis

"The power of language to influence human behavior and human welfare is remarkable. Man perhaps does not have the exclusive ability to use symbolic behavior but he is unique in his ability to use that symbolism which we know as language. It frequently happens that an agency which can bring discomfort and harm may, if skillfully used, produce the opposite effect. That fact brings us to the purpose of this little book. As we learn to use suggestive words and other behavior for the benefit of the human being we may at the same time control the fortuitous circumstances which sometime cause us to give suggestions bringing pain, despair and hopelessness to our patients. The intention of the present work is to be as practical as possible without becoming simply a how-to-do-it book. I have endeavored to state the principles which have practical application in the clinical situation. The specific application of these principles must largely be left to the ingenuity and intelligence of the clinician. This monograph is written solely for professional use.
