Corrosion : materials

Reflecting the substantial increase in knowledge about corrosion, which "while silent and often subtle, is probably the most significant cause of degradation of society's structures..." (from the preface), the update of ASM's 1987 Metals Handbook on the subject now occupies three volumes. The first (2003) addresses fundamentals, testing, and protection, while the third (2006) will address environments and industries. In this second volume, on materials, editors Cramer and Covino (both of the U.S. Department of Energy) have drawn together contributors from eight countries and have arranged material in three sections on ferrous metals, nonferrous metals and specialty products, and environmental performance of nonmetallic materials (e.g. refractories, ceramics, concrete, protective coatings, and rubber linings). Concluding the handbook are a historical review of the global cost of corrosion; a gallery of corrosion damage, consisting of color photographs, case studies and solutions; and a substantial section of reference information. Annotation :2006 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com).

  • "ASM Handbook, Volume 13B provides comprehensive handbook coverage of the corrosion performance of materials and the selection and application of materials for corrosion resistance. Material developments and advances in the study of corrosion since the landmark Metals Handbook, Volume 13, Corrosion (1987) have driven the development of a volume devoted to the corrosion performance of materials and the selection and application of materials for corrosion resistance. The result: a 700-page ASM Handbook, comprised of 48 peer-reviewed articles on how metals and nonmetals are effected by various elements. Covers ferrous and nonferrous metals: processed materials, including thermal spray coatings, electroplated materials, and clad metals; special products, including amorphous materials, intermetallics, and metal matrix composites; and nonmetallics, including ceramics, concrete, coatings, composites and elastomers. Includes an article on the global cost of corrosion and a full-color gallery of corrosion damage. ASM Handbook, Volume 13B, Corrosion: Materials joins Volume 13A: Corrosion: Fundamentals, Testing, and Protection (2003) and Volume 13C: Corrosion: Environments and Industries (2006) in providing a scope of information from practical to material selection to the fundamental electrochemical nature of the kinetics and dynamics of corrosion to round out ASM Handbook coverage of all aspects of corrosion."@en
