  • "The dissertation consists of two parts. The first is an attmept to recover meaning--the artist's intentions--from the vantage point of both stylistic analysis and iconographical interpretation. The first chapter covers the Pollock's formative work, his years with Thomas Hart Benton, and his interest in landscape imagery. The second chapter covers the influence of surrealism, primitive art, and the issue of psychoanalytic interpretations of Pollock's work. Chapter three covers the development of the poured technique, the stylistic innovations and sources of Pollock's abstractions, as well as argues for the compatibility of meaning and abstraction while proposing an iconographical interpretation of the poured paintings. Chapter four covers Pollock's return to figuration in 1951-53 as well as the stylistic and thematic continuities and breaks with Pollock's previous work.
