"When first I undertook the study of the theory of Art, many years ago, I was impressed by the emphasis of pleasure attainment in all descriptions of art works, and by the emphatic pleasurableness of my own mental state during the contemplation of artistic productions. My thought being thus turned to the consideration of the relation of aesthetics to hedonics, I was led to make a careful study of the psychology of pleasure and of its correlate pain: the results of this study I here lay before those who may be interested"--Pref.

The psychologist needs no other incentive than the scientist's curiosity to lead him to look through the pages which follow, provided he finds indications that his science is aided in any manner. But the artist, at the mere mention of psychology, will be apt to lay the book aside; and as I have some faint hope that I may help him or the cause which he has most at heart, I must beg him, even if he go no farther, to give a hearing to this introduction, in which I shall try to state as briefly as possible my notion of the relation that exists between art and science.
