His father was a member of the Erskine family of Scotland who had emigrated to northern Ireland for political reasons. His father changed his name from Erskine to Askin. He married Alice Rea and they were the parents of three sons: John, William and Robert, and two daughters: Mary and Sarah. John emigrated and established himself as a merchant at Albany, trading chiefly with Indians. Later, he settled at Mackinac where he received an appointment as commissary in the military department. He later settled at Detroit and engaged in various business ventures. He married (1) an Indian wife and had three children: John Jr., Catherine and Madelaine; (2) Marie Archange Barthe, a member of a French family of Detroit and they were the parents of nine children. Several other families of the area are also included. The paper also includes a historical account of the settlement of Detroit."@en . . . . . . . . . . . . . "History" .
