  • ""Fifty-five years ago, on 15th February 1943, it was 313 days to Christmas and the prisoners of war in Stalag Luft III, Sagan, were bored and restless. Alan Mackay, a trainee journalist turned RAF bomber pilot, decided something had to be done to stop the negative rumour-mongering and to boost morale. And so the Daily Recco was born -- a newspaper pinned daily to the prison camp wall. This was the only newspaper of its kind published during the Third Reich and one that survived through two POW camps. Copies of the Daily Recco were carried out of the camp and kept safe by sympathisers. They survive to this day. Including extracts and exact replica copies of the Daily Recco, 313 Days to Christmas is a unique and detailed record of the war experience for many.
