- "My dissertation examines three basic issues relating to Mexican revolutionary Francisco "Pancho" Villa's foreign policy: first, Villa's (as well as his rivals, Venustiano Carranza's and Victoriano Huerta's) efforts to use the mass media as a foreign policy weapon to generate American support for himself and to blunt support for his rivals; second, the depth and durability of widespread American cultural visions of Mexican inferiority as they surfaced repeatedly in the American press and diplomatic correspondence; and, third, Villa's successes and failures to surmount these American stereotyped visions through the manufacture of effective propaganda."
- "From the fall of 1913 through the late summer of 1915, when Carranza gained U.S. de facto recognition, Villa energetically sought to promote friendship between himself and Americans and with the United States government, as well as, to a lesser extent, to promote Mexican nationalism. His manipulation of the American press to achieve these policy ends was highly effective and won him continued official American support even months after he had been wiped out as viable contender for the Mexican presidency."
- "This dissertation has approached these three issues by examining Mexican archives to uncover the workings of Villa's (and Carranza's and Huerta's) propaganda systems, as well as by assessing media and diplomatic correspondence. In doing so, it makes contributions to Revolutionary study and the larger topic of inter-American (particularly U.S.-Mexican) relations, as well as addressing methodological issues in the use of mass media in historical research."
