Symbols at your door. #5

Five houses in the remote English village of Beckworth are defaced with the same graffiti?a grotesquely leering gargoyle?s head?then three of those houses are devastated by burglary or murder. These assaults seem to be directed at newcomers usurping village homes. For instance, the evil, grinning face appears on the door of Coppins Farmhouse, a lovely old building modernized beyond recognition by the Dexters, who are freshly transplanted from London and having enough problems adjusting as it is. Carol Dexter feels isolated and unhappy and unnerved by the graffiti. She attributes it to the Beckworth Bruisers, a teenage gang who have frightened her on a separate occasion. But Detective Chief Inspector Webb wonders. Why is the strange graffiti somehow familiar? All he knows is that he must act quickly before the malevolent force behind the ominous symbol can strike again?
