What is psychology a basic survey

"My main effort in this book has been to stimulate the student's psychological thinking, and this emphasis has caused three approaches with which which this present survey deviates from those of other textbooks. First: Emphasizing the integration of material, I have had to omit some data of detailed research which would break the continuity of the survey and obscure the over-all point of view. Offering the problems first, the student should be prepared for looking at percentages, graphs, and controversies in the many specialized books which had no appeal for him before. Second: I have included the main concepts of depth psychology which link basic psychology with abnormal psychology, although I could not cover the most recent findings in this field; they will be discussed in my next survey on the topic: Normal or Abnormal? Third: A report of studies which my students have carried out according to principles of Experimental Depth Psychology should serve as an indication of how students, working under the limited facilities of a small college laboratory, can be drawn into the fields of psychological investigation. The present survey emphasizes that psychology is not static but dynamic, that it aims not at a mere classification of data but at their interrelationship, not at the surface but at the depth of behavior"--Preface.
