  • "For many years soilless culture has been employed in the study of plant physiology, but during recent years this method of growing plants has been adopted by commercial and amateur growers as a means of producing crops of high yields and quality cheaply and cleanly. The advantages of soilless culture are numerous, no digging has to be done, weeds are prectically absent, sterilizing is simple and rapid. Elaborate composts are not required and all important is the fact that the growth ofthe plants is more easily controlled. Plants grown by this method are free from soil-borne disease, and due to controlled feeding are more resistant to moulds and mildews than those grown by more orthodox methods. Some plants such as tomatoes can be planted closer than those insoil, as there is no competition for available nutrients, and also the leaf area can be reduced without detriment to the quantity or quality of the fruit ..."
