Iraçéma, or, Honey-lips / & Manuel de Moraes, the convert / [by J.M. Pereira da Silva] ; [both] translated from the Brazilian by Richard and Isabel Burton
Jose de Alencar's prose-poem Iracema, first published in 1865, is a classic of Brazilian literature--perhaps the most widely-known piece of fiction within Brazil, and the most widely-read of Alencar;s many works. Set in the sixteenth century, it is an extremely romantic portrayal of a doomed live between a Portuguese soldier and an Indian maiden. Iracema reflects the gingerly way that mid-nineteenth cenury Brazil dealt with race mixture and multicultural experience. Precisely because of its nineteenth-century romanticism, Iracema strongly contributed to a Brazilian sense of nationhood--contemp.
"Set in sixteenth-century Brazil, this prose-poem is "a passionate tale of doomed love between a beautiful young Tabajara Indian woman, Iracema, and a Portuguese soldier, Martim."--Jacket."

"One of the greatest novels of Brazilian Literature, Iracema metaphorically recounts the origins of Brazil. The story revolves around the colonist Martim and his love for the Indian maiden Iracema. From their union is born a son, the new man of the New World. But while the son survives, the union costs the life of his mother, or in other words, the life of the indigenous peoples of Brazil."
