Deux jours plus tard, le pasteur King, faisant fi des menaces du président Johnson, qui manoeuvre en coulisses pour salir son image, prend lui-même la tête d'une deuxième marche, où plus du tiers des participants ne sont pas de race noire. Mais parvenu au pont, il s'arrête, s'agenouille pour prier et rebrousse chemin. Pourtant, Johnson, sous la pression populaire, est sur le point de céder. Diese Ehrung wurde indes in vielen US-Medien nicht gefeiert, sondern kritisiert. Der Tenor: Ava DuVernays Politdrama über Martin Luther Kings Kampf für das Wahlrecht der Schwarzen hätte noch viel mehr Nominierungen erhalten müssen. Besonders der Umstand, dass es die Filmemacherin selber (sie wäre die erste schwarze Frau überhaupt im Rennen um den Regie-Oscar gewesen) und Hauptdarsteller David Oyelowo nicht in die Endauswahl geschafft haben, wurde als Indiz für einen latenten Rassismus in Hollywood gesehen. Wer dem entgegenhielt, dass die Oscar-Academy doch erst im vergangenen Jahr Steve McQueens Sklaverei-Drama "12 Years a Slave" mit dem Hauptpreis bedacht habe, bekam womöglich etwas vom "weißen schlechten Gewissen" zu hören, das für jene Wahl ausschlaggebend gewesen sei. Wie so oft in solchen Fällen hat sich die Diskussion bald verselbständigt, die schon vor Weihnachten mit einer Kontroverse um die historische Rolle von Präsident Johnson begann, und "Selma" selbst geriet ein bisschen aus dem Fokus. Er ist nüchtern betrachtet kein Meisterwerk, aber ein sehenswerter Film über ein wichtiges Kapitel der amerikanischen Zeitgeschichte ist er allemal - nicht mehr und nicht weniger.
