"The purpose of this survey, conducted in the spring of 1976 with a national sample of the American work force, was to estimate the impact on social and political attitudes and political behavior of the experience of unemployment. Class consciousness and attitudes toward "the American dream" were of particular interest. The sample universe is defined as the labor force eighteen years of age and older living in the 150 largest metropolitan areas in the United States Membership in the labor force was defined as being presently employed or seeking employment. There are a total of 1,345 respondents: 779 working and 566 unemployed. The survey questionnaire was administered by telephone."
