Carlyle's breakthrough work, Sartor Resartus, was published in 1833-34. It was a disguised spiritual autobiography, in which he faces the tendencies to intellectual skepticism and dedicates himself to a life of spiritual affirmation. The first half of the book is about the ideas of a self-made philosopher who believes everything can be explained in terms of clothes.

""A part fictional, part autobiographical account of a professor used by the author to put for his own philosophical ideas and life experiences" --Provided by publisher."@en

"À la fois essai philosophique, roman d'apprentissage, ou encore satire, cet ouvrage de T. Carlyle (1795-1881) concilie les opinions réactionnaires de l'écrivain écossais avec son rejet de l'absolutisme et de l'Ancien régime--[Memento]."
"Sartor Resartus was written as a fictitious commentary on the writings of an imaginary German thinker named Diogenes TeufelsdrIckh, author of Clothes: their Origin and Influence. Reviewing this work is a curmudgeonly, skeptical English Reviewer, referred to simply as "Editor." This eccentric novel confuses fact and fiction, the serious and satirical, in order to better confront the nature of truth. Thomas Carlyle's Sartor Resartus became one of the important texts of nineteenth-century English literature, influencing the Romantic movement, Victorian culture and American Transcendentalism. "Carlyle's great satire, a parody review of a supposed treatise on the "Philosophy of Clothes" by a certain "Herr Teufelsdrockh," is a humorous dissection of the follies and peculiarities of human culture and civilization."
"Published in 1836, this pioneering mix of fiction and fact had a great influence on later writers despite having met with little success in its own time. In the novel, a nameless editor presents the life and work of a fictional German philosopher named Diogenes Teufelsdröckh who writes on the subject of clothing. Carlyle's book satirizes the work of Hegel in particular, and German Idealism in general."
