The principal and staff development in the school : with a special focus on the role of the principal in mainstreaming

The objective of this document is to provide the school principal with some understanding of the concepts of adult learning and development and an awareness of some of the processes and techniques involved in a staff development program. Chapters present a paradigm for growth, cover the planning of the staff development program, provide perspectives on understanding adults and their development, characterize "the enabling person," outline approaches to organizing for staff development, discuss ways to present information and explore dimensions of small group interaction processes and their potential for effective staff development. Experiential activities for staff development programs are suggested and formative and summative approaches to program evaluation are explained. New competencies required of the school principal for facilitating organizational change to implement Public Law 94-152: the Education for All Handicapped Children Act (1975) are listed. Although the material can be used by anyone conducting staff development programs and sessions, it is advised that additional material and actual training may be necessary before competency is acquired.
