Christmas shopping, 2006 in review

December has traditionally been the most important month for retailers in Canada, and 2006 was no exception. The Christmas season can be a make or break time of year for many types of store but this is particularly true for shoe, clothing accessories and jewellery stores as well as home electronics and appliances stores. This study analyzes December retail sales nationally as well as by province and for the three largest CMAs in Canada using data from the Monthly Retail Trade Survey to identify how consumption patterns varied across the country.--Document.

  • "This paper will update the analysis of what the retail trade patterns were for 2006 Christmas period. In addition, analysis is available for the first time for three of Canada¿s Census Metropolitan Areas (CMAs). Comparable December retail sales data for Toronto, Vancouver and Montréal will be analyzed against an 'average' of the January to November period. Comparisons will also be made against the month of December in previous years. Analysis will also include a decomposition of the growth of retail sales."
