Sharpe's enemy Richard Sharpe and the defense of Portugal, Christmas 1812
Major Sharpe leads a small force into the mountains in order to rescue a woman held hostage by deserters. But one of the renegades is Sergeant Hakeswill, Sharpe's most implacable enemy and the rescue becomes the least of Sharpe's problems.
"A band of renegades led by Obadiah Hakeswill, Sharpe's mortal enemy, holds a group of women hostage in a strategic mountain pass. On the other side of the pass, Napolean's Grande Armee maneuvers to crush the British Army in Portugal. Outnumbered and attacked from two sides, Sharpe must hold his ground or die in the attempt."

"His enemy is, of course, Obadiah Hakeswill. By 1812 a lot of men had deserted from the British, French, Spanish, and Portuguese armies and some of them--too many of them--had banded together in the border mountains where they were led by a renegade Frenchman nicknamed Pot-au-Feu. They formed a semi-military group of bandits and their enemies all agreed on one thing--they had to be crushed. Send for Sharpe."@en
"Embattled once again, this time in the mountains of western Spain near the pass called the Gateway of God, Richard Sharpe faces a redoubtable array of opponents, including an army of deserters, ten fierce French battalions, and the contemptible Obadiah Hakeswill."@en
