Middlesex roots : the ancestors of Clara McCandless and Morley Thomas
Members of the McCandless family came to Canada from Ireland in 1827, but did not come to Middlesex before in the mid 1870's. They lived for a short time in Kingston and then settled in Chinguacousy Township of Peel County in 1830. Andrew McCandless (1824-1898), one early ancestor, was born in County Down, Ireland. He married Margaret Wiley (1830-1907) of Ireland in 1854. He died in Strathroy. Another ancestor, Francis Thomas (1812-ca. 1875) arrived with his wife, Mary Harris (1812-1881), and their three sons in Canada from England in 1840. They were both born in Cornwall, England. They purchased two farms one the North Street in Westminster Township and added five more children to their family. Robert (1821-1888) and George (1823-1880) Auckland, the Auckland family emigrants, came from Lincolnshire, England to Westminster Township in Canada West in 1842 and 1844. The early Sullivan emigrants were the Irish born John Sullivan (d. 1835) and his wife, Lettisha Cassell (1795-1877), who immigrated to Canada in 1832.
