Adventures of Prince Achmed

This film is oldest extant animated feature. It was made by Lotte Reiniger using the silhouette technique which she invented. She manipulated cutouts made from cardboard and thin sheets of lead under the camera to create a world of delicate, filigree backgrounds and intricately jointed characters. This is the story of a wicked sorcerer who tricks Prince Achmed into mounting a magical flying horse that sends the rider off on a flight to his death.

  • "Summary: Started in 1923 and completed in 1926, Lotte Reiniger's "Die Abenteuer des Prinzen Achmed" was the first full-length animated film in the history of the cinema and has become a classic of the genre. As in all her work, Reiniger employed her distinctive and elegant silhouette technique to great effect and the film was highly acclaimed when it was first shown. The story consists of a number of episodes from the Arabian Nights and is woven around the efforts of Prince Achmed to rescue the beautiful Peri Banu from the clutches of the wicked African Sorcerer, which he does with the help of Aladdin and the Ogress of the Mountains. Though the film retains the original silent titles by Edmund Dulac, this new version has been colourtinted according to Reiniger's original instructions and has a specially composed musical score by Freddie Phillips. Though the film is credited to Reiniger's husband, Carl Koch, it is her design and animation that give it its special quality. Also involved in its production were Walter Ruttmann and Berthold Bartosch."
