The Cael Validation Report

The Cooperative Assessment of Experiential Learning (cael) Project involves Educational Testing Service and some 250 member institutions. The purpose of the project is to develop procedures and materials that will be useful in strengthening the assessment of experiential learning in higher education. This report describes extensive findings that focus on the strengths and weaknesses of different evaluation methods, and other characteristics of assessment procedures that affect reliability, validity, and usefulness to students. Studies of the assessment of interpersonal skills, portfolio assessment, assessment of work competences, as well as selected institutional studies of expert evaluator judgment are described. The report provides a basic reference for institutions that wish to examine the reliability and validity of their own assessment procedures and the soundness of their underlying educational rationales.
