The memoir of a Quaker college professor and antiwar activist. Becoming a conscientious objector at Haverford College after World War II, he worked for the American Friends Service Committee and the Fellowship of Reconciliation. In 1965 he was deeply affected by the self-immolation at the Pentagon of Quaker Norman Morrison. Returning to college teaching in 1972, he taught antiwar literature and memoir writing.
