"Papers of Walter and William Stewart, residents of Clinton, East Feliciana Parish, La., consist largely of receipts for purchases of cloth, leather, coffee, tea, knives, cloth, and other dry goods; bills for state and parish taxes and receipts showing payment thereof; pamphlets and booklets pertaining to meetings and business of the Free and Accepted Masons and the United Confederate Veterans; and letters from Confederate veterans of the Civil War written in response to Walter Stewart's queries about members of his and other regiments. Included are letters from S.E. Packwood of Magnolia, Miss., who writes of his capture by Union forces at Gettysburg and imprisonment at Fort Delaware; Virginia B. Hilliard, who provides information concerning the military career and death of her former husband, General Albert Gallatin Jenkins; and R.J. Hancock of Charlottesville, Va. Also included is a printed address by Colonel J.S. Scott delivered to the 1st Louisiana Cavalry, in which Walter Stewart served, on April 23, 1865."
