Profile of Neglect: A Survey of the State of Knowledge of Child Neglect

Reviewed is recent literature and research on child neglect. Covered are the following topics (and sub-topics in parentheses): (1) definition of neglect (distinguishing neglect from abuse, legal vs. Professional definitions, operational definition); (2) prevalence of neglect; etiology (economics, cultural values and child caring, breakdown of the nuclear family, parental pathology, cycles of neglect); (3) identification, casefinding, early warning signals; consequences (neurological and other physical sequelae, emotional sequelae, cognitive deficit, antisocial behavior); (4) prevention (child advocacy, rights of children, help for families at risk); and (5) (social casework, group techniques, parent-child community programs, mental heal centers, day care, engineered communities).
