American Baptist pastor Clarence Larkin believed in a dispensationalist interpretation of the Book of Revelation. According to this school of theology, human history can be divided up into a number of distinct periods or "dispensation" in which God relates to human beings in different ways. Dispensationalists view the Book of Revelation as a prophetic template for future events, albeit one that can be difficult to understand. To help his congregation understand this interpretation, Larkin created large wall charts that he used while preaching. These diagrams made him famous in the early 20th century, and some continue to be used in certain conservative Protestant churches.
