"Playfair affirms that "It gives me a great deal of pleasure to think that Geology is so much in vogue" with the men of the south part of the island. He addresses matters arising from Allan's long absence and solicits his advice. Playfair also mentions the editorial process of gathering papers for the Transactions [of the Royal Society]. Allan was a prominent mineralogist with an extensive collection of natural history specimens. Playfair was a geologist whose works include Illustrations of the Huttonian theory of the earth (1802)."
