[Amahl and the night visitors]

"A new version of Gian Carlo Menotti's 1951 opera. Amahl and the night visitors premiered on Christmas Eve 27 years ago tonight, the first opera written especially for television. A success with critics and viewers alike, it was a yuletide tradition until 1966, when it was withdrawn from TV at the composer's request. Menotti, who wrote the libretto as well as the music, personally supervised this 1978 revival, which was filmed in London and Israel. The story takes place at the humble cottage of an impoverished widow and her crippled son, Amahl, on the road to Bethlehem. It is the eve of the first Christmas, and when the Three Kings arrive with gifts for the Christ Child, Amahl's mother grants them lodging, and, unknowingly, creates a problem for her son: how can he match the Kings' tribute when all he has to offer is his crutch?"--TV guide, December 24, 1978.

  • ""Throughout the decade of the 1950s, Gian Carlo Menotti's opera Amahl and the night visitors was a beloved Christmas television tradition, shown live every year, beginning with its premiere performance in 1951. Amahl was the first opera to be commissioned for television, and the first to fully exploit the potential of the new medium. With a libretto (in English) of great lyrical beauty, penned by the composer himself, and a cast of superb singing actors, Amahl magnificently achieves the goal of NBC Opera Theatre's founders, which was "to bring sincerity and realism to opera". The work, tailored by Menotti for children, was for many an eye-opening introduction into the world of opera as musical theater. It remains a delightful, inspirational, and ultimately deeply moving experience."--Conteneur."
