Lieutenant William Barton of Morris County, New Jersey, and his descendants

William Barton (1754-1829) came to America as a member of the British Army under General Gage in 1774. He found himself in sympathy with the colonists' cause, deserted and served with American forces to the end of the Revolutionary War. He married Margaret Henderson, ca. 1780. They had twelve children, 1782-1804. The family lived near Marcella, New Jersey. His son, Ensign Eleazar Barton (1791-1865), who served in the War of 1812, married Rachel Bostedo Read (1799-1849) in 1816 in Morris County, New Jersey. They had eleven children, 1817-1841. The family migrated to Knox Grove, Illinois, in 1846. Descendants listed lived in Illinois, Iowa, and elsewhere.
