Seismic performance of well-confined concrete bridge columns

There is a new focus in seismic design on the performance of reinforced concrete bridges. In a performance-oriented environment, a bridge is designed to meet specified performance levels. Recent earthquakes have provided preliminary performance data demonstrating that large losses can result from inadequate performance of bridge structures. Further research is required to better define performance indices and develop overall design methodologies to improve the understanding of bridge performance.
