Beyond Taylorism: Computerization and the 'new industrial labor relations'

The findings are that the impact of computerized automation on the labor process is complex, contradictory and multi-dimensional. Its comparable effects on the skills of these occupations are not uniform nor simply categorized as deskilling or upgrading. The research also shows that automation is not the singular nor primary 'cause' of changes in skills and the organization of production. Managerial decisions around the definition and use of skills and computerization affect the implementation of technology in the production process.

  • "Quality Circles, rather than being a transformation of labor relations toward democratic participation are managerial strategies to create a decentralized organizational structure to facilitate workers' cooperation with management's goals for efficiency and productivity improvements."@en
  • "Workers' experiences with Quality Circles are examined as part of the labor relations within the firm. The structure of the program, the issues raised in the sessions and the outcomes of these processes are analyzed as part of labor-management cooperation or conflict."@en
  • "This research is based on an exploratory case study of a unionized plant which designs and manufactures parts and systems for the Department of Defense and commercial applications. In-depth, open-ended interviews were conducted with four occupations--machinists, process engineers, drafters and design drafters--which represent related phases in the design and production process. These interviews describe conventional skills and changes in their use as work is automated using Numerical Control and CAD/CAM equipment."@en
  • "This dissertation explores two major contemporary changes in the workplace: the impact of computerization on skills and the organization of production; and the role of Quality Circles in the 'democratization' of the workplace and the reorganization of bureaucratic decision-making. It is concerned with labor processes which experience deskilling, reskilling and shifts in the lines of demarcation between occupations as automation and reorganization of work occur. This work is concerned with organizational as well as technical processes which shape the use of skills. Moreover, the participation of the union and members in Quality Circles raises issues concerning conflict over the control of the process, the definition of problems to be addressed, and the outcomes of these processes."@en
