Letters from his service in the U.S. House show his interest in "Bleeding Kansas," appointments to offices, and his 1865 western tour. Five letters deal with George F. Nesbitt and the Credit Mobilier scandal. Later letters deal mostly with Colfax's lecture tours. The "Across the Continent" lecture mentions his interest in uniting the country by rail.
