  • "Nova Scotia is haunted by her former self - Acadia, first settled in 1605. The landscape immortalized by Longfellow through his tale of lovers separated by the Acadian expulsion of 1755, has come to be known as the Land of Evangeline."
  • ""Evangeline is the epic tale of one woman's search for her lost love. In the tumult of the Acadian expulsion from Canada, Evangeline Bellefontaine is separated from her beloved Gabriel Lajeunesse. As she journeys across the United States, she anxiously tries to find a trace of Lajeunesse, without success. Years go by and Evangeline despairs of ever seeing her love's face again. But when all hope seems gone, the couple is given one final chance to reunite."--Provided by publisher."
  • "A narrative poem telling of Evangeline's search for her former betrothed, Gabriel."@en
  • "Evangeline, A Tale of Acadie is a poem published in 1847 by the American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. The poem follows an Acadian girl named Evangeline and her search for her lost love Gabriel, set during the time of the Great Upheaval. The work was written in dactylic hexameter reminiscent of Greek and Latin classics, though Longfellow was criticized for the meter. Longfellow got the idea for the poem from his friend Nathaniel Hawthorne and published Evangeline in 1847. It has remained one of his most enduring works.-- Excerpted from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia."@en
[SDM]."
  • "A narrative poem about the separated lovers Gabriel and Evangeline, and the sufferings of their Acadian people who were driven out of Nova Scotia by the British."
  • "One of Longfellow's most famous works, Evangeline is loosely based on the fate suffered by the Acadian community during what is now known as the Expulsion of the Acadians from Nova Scotia."@en
  • "Longfellow's Evangeline comes from a true story. The tale of young Emmeline Labiche and the true love of her life, Louis Arceneaux. The pair were separated when the British invaded Nova Scotia in 1755, and Louis (Gabriel in the poem) was forced on a ship and set out to sea. Orphaned, Emmeline was adopted by the family of the Widow Borda, who regarded her as not of this earth, but rather as their guardian angel, and this is why they called her no longer Emmeline, but Evangeline, or God's little angel. The family was exiled to Maryland, but Maryland was no home for them; and eventually the family joined other Acadians in Louisiana. In Louisiana, Evangeline began to search for Louis."
  • "Evangeline describes the betrothal of a fictional Acadian girl named Evangeline Bellefontaine to her beloved, Gabriel Lajeunesse, and their separation as the British deport the Acadians from Acadie in the Great Upheaval. The poem then follows Evangeline across the landscapes of America as she spends years in a search for him, at some times being near to Gabriel without realizing he was near."@en
