"This book explores the historical development and advancement of hypnotism. The author not only refers to his twelve years' hypnotic practice and research, but also gives such a general account of the subject as can be brought within reasonable compass. The author hopes the description of the different methods may prove useful to those who wish to begin hypnotic work. It is impossible to give anything like a full account of the medical and surgical cases that have been recorded. The author has therefore (1) selected some from his own practice, and (2) chosen others, most of which have neither been previously translated into English nor published abroad in easily accessible form--the majority being taken from foreign medical journals, etc. The author has found it equally difficult to condense the experimental phenomena of hypnosis, and has been compelled to give a short account of most of them; but post-hypnotic appreciation of time, which apparently has an important bearing on hypnotic theory, is dealt with in greater detail. Hypnotic theories are too numerous and complicated to be described at length, but the principal ones are outlined and discussed. The author has endeavoured to show what awaits those who embark on hypnotic practice--to picture its successes and failures, and the dangers, mainly theoretical, which are said to be associated with it.
