- "The Lee girls were four of the six children of Robert E. Lee. When the young children began coming into this world, Robert E. Lee worked in the War office in Washington D.C. Lee went from a young lieutenant in the Corps of Engineers to an army officer at Fort Hamilton, Fort Monroe, Harpers Ferry, Baltimore, the Mexican War, traveling in Ohio and down to Texas, general in the Confederacy to president of Washington college and superintendent of West Point. He turned down a position to take command of the Union forces because he realized he would then be involved in battle against friends and kinspeople. The general was known and loved by many and was mourned greatly at his passing in October 1870. The Lee girls, Mary Custis Lee, Anne Carter Lee, Eleanor Agnes Lee and Mildred Childe Lee all had very distinct personalities from each other but all shared a common respect for the father whom they adored. Many historical and sociological changes through the South were affected through the lives of the members of this aristocratic southern family."@en
