  • "North Carolina used one number system for all regiments and a separate numbering system for the artillery and for the cavalry. At the beginning of the war North Carolina classified its units into "Volunteers" and "State Troops." To ameliorate this confusing situation, The Volunteers were renumbered. Thereafter, all troops were designated State Troops."@en
