Countermodeling as a strategy for decision making : epistemological problems in design

The investigation of the nature of design revealed that the essential problems in design are epistemological ones. Through the review of various notions of design, it is argued that the proper understanding of the situation, which, in turn, is dependent upon the understanding of the goals and the potentiality of a plan cannot be acquired without a holistic understanding of the goals and the potentiality of the plan being devised. From here it is concluded that design knowledge is essentially built upon a series of mutually dependent assumptions which are "colored" by the designer's Weltanschauung, and not necessarily warranted. The credibility of such knowledge, therefore, is open to serious question.
