The pre-revolutionary Irish in Massachusetts, 1620-1775

"Irish Catholics were certainly among the settlers from Ireland but there exists no way of ascertaining their religion. Presbyterianism is mentioned as the religion of the average Irish immigrant ... in 1765, the low average of .02 per cent for the entire colony outside of Boston would be slightly higher if the Boston figure and percentage for 1770, 1,368 Irishmen and .088, were considered..."-- P. [138] -139. The few Roman Catholic Irish immigrants encountered even more resistance and opposition than did the Scotch-Irish Presbyterians during these colonial years of immigration. The Puritan opposition to either the Presbyterians or the Roman Catholics kept their numbers significantly below 1 per cent.
