Some 8 million Americans suffer from eating disorders, chiefly anorexia, bulimia nervosa (alternating phases of bingeing and purging) and compulsive overeating. Millions more people are at risk of developing full-blown eating disorders. Up to 90 percent of all eating-disorder sufferers are believed to be women.
